Typing has come to stay and whether we like it or not. we type every day: From our smartphones to our personal computers. As a typist, we meet words which contains French accents such as accent grave (à, è, etc) , Accent aigu (é), Cédille (ç) and many others. Typing these accents in Microsoft word is really easy when you know the keystrokes to press, in this post we will delve into typing all french accents. I assure you it’s very simple and easy.

Accent Grave (à, è)

in order to type accent grave, you press control key + the backtick key and the attached vowel. as shown below

as shown above, on a standard keyboard the backtick is located above the tab key. So holding down Ctrl + backtick + the Vowel will generate the Accent Grave symbol and when you want it Upper Case you add shift so in turn Ctrl + Back tick + Shift + The Vowel

Accent aigu (é)

Typing Accent aigu is fairly easy, just hold down the Control Key + the Apostrophe Key + the character you wish to add the accent aigu

With Just three key Stroke and right there you have typed the accent aigu, it fairly simple just remember if you want it uppercase add Shift to the KeyStroke and don’t worry about pressing the keys at the same time let it follow the order below:

Cédille (ç)

in order to type the cédille hold down Control Key + Comma + the Key (example c) and with these three keystrokes the Cédille will be generated.

the comma key is on the same key as the less than symbol holding down Contol key + the Coma Key + the Alphabet eg(C) will yield ç as shown below

Circonflexe (ê)

Circonflexe vary a little bit as compared to the others. with the Circonflexe you hold down the Control Key + Shift Key + six(6) Key (NB: the one above the alphabet thus within the alphanumeric keys ) + the Alphabet. here are the keys you need to press

Tréma (ö)

with the Trema is similar to the circonflexe but instead of six (6) you hold down semicolon key, thus Control Key + Shift Key + Semicolon Key + the Alphabet.
